This website first started in 2003, when I got my first digital camera. Between then and the summer of 2006 the ship photographs were taken, in the main, either in the River Thames, the approaches to Dunkirk or in the approach channels to Flushing Roads. These areas limited the type of ships in the collection - for example there were not many V.L.C.C.s or large passenger ships, but plenty of container ships, car carriers and bulk carriers, ro-ro vessels and tankers.

I changed jobs in September 2006 and this new job allowed me to spread my wings and travel further afield. I cannot add photos as regularly as I once did, but there will a greater variety of locations and ships.

The site currently has 2201 ship photographs which have been viewed a total of 337658 times.

Some selections will be less than complete. Each ship is assigned a type, but not every ship has a company or flag recorded against its name.

Sun, May 11, 2008 The Observer's Book of Ships

This weekend I picked up a copy of 'The Observer's Book of Ship' - the 1973 edition, which is the edition I had as a boy. Most pleasing. I have no idea what happened to my original copy.

What was, however, a little sad, was flicking through it and realising that most of the British shipping companies mentioned in the book no longer existed: Silver Line, Anchor Line, Booth Line, Buries Markes, Harrison Line, Clan Line, Prince Line, Strick Line, Glen Line, Reardon Smith..... The list goes on.

It also reminded me of how much things have changed in the thirty odd years since the book was published.

Thu, May 08, 2008 Heysham Headache

The Isle of Man Steam Packet is facing scheduling problems because of a lack of water at Heysham. At low water springs there isn't enough water for the Ben-My-Chree to get in and out of the port.

The Steam Packet is in talks with the port's owners about the situation. iomtoday has the full story.

Tue, May 06, 2008 New photo of Ben My Chree

I finally managed to get some decent photos of the Ben My Chree in her new colour scheme. The set is now complete! Ben My Chree, Snaefell and Viking all in the latest company livery:

Mon, May 05, 2008 IOM Steampacket looking at tonnage

According to The Manx Independent, Steam Packet executives have visited Tazmania to take a look at an ex-US military seacat.

Originally built as TT Lines' Devilcat, the HSV 1 Joint Venture saw active service with the American military, but was returned to her builders, Incat, earlier this year. Presumably the Steam Packet will not be needing the helicopter pad.

Wed, April 30, 2008 Photos of 'Snaefell' added

I've added two photos of the Isle of Man Steampacket's Seacat Isle of Man/Sea Express 1 has returned to service as 'Snaefell'. The follows on the Superseacat 2 being renamed 'Viking'.

The photos can be seen here.
